I remember the day it happened. We met at the Torrance school. Red belts and above were given the choice to stay with Korea or with Mr. Norris. The Chuck Norris system was a mixed martial style Mr. Norris created. We were unique, not Korean. Korean Tang Soo Do practitioners denounced us as not being Tang Soo Do. They were right. We were Chuck Norris system, the first mixed martial artists. Dennis has forgotten Bob Barrow, his instructor from white to red. Dennis and I fought together several times on Bob's Torrance school team. When our team competed we took home 95% of the tournament hardware. Thank you Bob Barrow.

Black Belt Jones is the first Kung Fu action movie I ever saw. I watched it in 1978 in Rawalpindi , Pakistan in a cinema . They had a great big hand painted poster outside Bollywood style . I was blown away .

My son trains under Grandmaster Ho Sik Pak. He is an amazing teacher. He legitimately cares for all his students and works with them all to help them. Can’t recommend him enough, he is so great!

Hopefully there are still masters like you in Tang Soo Do. I did taekwondo for 4 years and was with a great master. I find Tang Soo Do super interesting.

Watched this around 2019 when I was just starting in Karate and I stopped when pandemic came in so I forgot how to do it, but I just reenrolled myself lately and trying to learn again. I Have issues with norris, but norris absolutely deserved to be promoted to the 10 degree or grandmaster status, without having to pay for the promotion. norris did much to use his celebrity to promote the arts. Korea has always been too money crazy within martial arts promotion. Those stripes and everything. Salute to norris glad he got the promotion status he truly deserved . Enjoy retirement norris

So happy that I stumbled on this video. I was a student at Tarzana Karate back in the early 80s and thoroughly enjoyed my experience learning Tang Soo Do from Grandmaster Ichikawa. I competed in the internationals as a blue belt (9/10 yrs old) and only participated in the “forms” competition. I did ok, but not good enough to place in the top 3. I did my own designed form that I ended up changing the day of… long story but a memorable experience nonetheless.

Cheesy but a classic movie my man it's Jim Kelly that movie got my respect for Jim Kelly. Never be one like him a lenged and down to earth. That's a educated black man . And not like this losesers that have excuses for anything lazy and are disgusting.

As far as i know, Shotokan don't use the hips move, so may be thats the reason that they lost using shotokan, also the timing its different at the forms. (Sorry fo my english)

I love your story and sharing this with us. You took those shots the best. However, I hate that Kelly blatantly tried to duplicate Lee and sucked at it. No originality at all. Come on Jim! There's just no need brotha. Then again it reflects his short time with Bruce and his admiration for him. I'm a fan of Kelly's since the 70's. Always thought he was a cool dude and he's one of the few humble people who could talk honestly about how awesome Bruce was without his ego getting in the way. This was a cool story. Again, thank you for sharing that with us.
